Helping Mamas in Uganda Give Birth Safely

Trades of Hope and Mercy for Mamas Partner to Help Mamas

Trades of Hope has proudly partnered with Mercy for Mamas to help reduce the heartbreaking death toll of expectant mothers in Uganda by providing “Mama Kits”. Mama Kits provide mothers with safe sterile medical supplies that help prevent infection, the leading cause of death for new mothers in Uganda. These kits make a direct impact on Uganda’s tragic postpartum death rate – currently 33 times higher than the United States.1

Women in Uganda are required to provide their own Mama Kits for hospital deliveries. Many women cannot afford to purchase their own kits. Without these kits, women in labor may be turned away by hospitals or risk death from infection due to home deliveries with unsterile delivery supplies. Mama Kits help women in Uganda give birth safely.

About Mercy for Mamas

Mercy for Mamas began in 2010 as a small personal project for Melissa Busby and her family. Melissa and her husband, Cody, were in the midst of adopting their youngest daughter Mercy from Uganda. Mercy became an orphan after her mother died during childbirth in a remote village.

“Mercy became an orphan after her mother died during childbirth in a remote village.”

When Melissa heard her story, she decided she needed to do some research and find out how often this happened. She was shocked as she learned about the maternal health crisis in Uganda. Her heart broke to hear of so many women dying in situations that often could have been prevented. Mercy for Mamas now has ministry partners working all over Uganda. They have distributed 30,000+ mama kits to women in need.2

About Trades of Hope

So many women live in poverty, not because they lack abilities, but because they lack opportunity. Trades of Hope was started to give women that opportunity for a better life.

So many women live in poverty, not because they lack abilities, but because they lack opportunity. Trades of Hope was started to give women that opportunity for a better life.

Each woman has a story, and with Trades of Hope’s help, their story has changed from pain and struggle to a story of hope!

Trades of Hope works with artisans and organizations that are helping women in difficult circumstances. Some women have been rescued from sex slavery. Others are raising handicapped children alone. Some are in war-torn countries and others have HIV/AIDS and leprosy.

These women have never had the chances we’ve had, yet they are just like us in so many ways. They love their families and hope and dream of a better life for them. Trades of Hope is helping by marketing their products through the home party model, so every woman can put food on their table, a roof over their heads, and provide medical care and education for her children.

Gifts of Hope is an important link in the chain of empowering women out of poverty. It is the vehicle through which we give back through a percentage of our product sales. Throughout the year, Trades of Hope gives donations to organizations with a specific vision in mind: fighting for justice for women around the world. That is why, in addition to the work we are doing by creating sustainable businesses, we choose to use Gifts of Hope to contribute to the efforts of others.
